I don’t suppose it would have been as much fun if the caravan had been directed to the nine US consulates in Mexico to apply legally.
Asylum seekers can only apply for asylum on U.S. land. That is the legal procedure. Period.
That is, applying at a US consulate is not legal procedure.
Fleeing general violence is not grounds for asylum.
Our church sponsored a Nepali family. After a number of years of doing things the right way, I attended the naturalization ceremony. Eighty-one people from nineteen countries. Paid their dues, did it the right way. Should I have stood up and yelled “CHUMPS!”
